Founders

Fred Swaniker and Acha Leke – Addis Ababa 2010 Fred Swaniker - Ghana

Fred Swaniker is deeply passionate about Africa and believes its future rests on the caliber of leaders who emerge on the continent over the next few decades. In line with this, he founded the African Leadership Academy, which aims to develop 6,000 leaders for Africa over the next 50 years.

A serial entrepreneur, Fred was founding Chief Operating Officer of Synexa Life Sciences, a biotechnology company in Cape Town that today employs 40 South African scientists. Fred also founded Global Leadership Adventures, a leadership development program that today serves 600 youth annually in 16 different countries. Prior to his entrepreneurial pursuits, Fred was a consultant with McKinsey & Company where he advised large companies across Africa. Fred was recently selected as one of 115 young African leaders who met with US President Obama in August 2010 to help shape the President’s agenda for Africa.

In 2006, Fred was recognized as one of the ‘top 15 emerging social entrepreneurs in the world’ by the Echoing Green Foundation, and has also been recognized as a TED Fellow and a Fellow of the Aspen Institute’s Global Leadership Network. Fred has an MBA from Stanford University, where he was named an Arjay Miller Scholar, a distinction awarded to the top 10% of each graduating class.

Acha Leke - Cameroon

Acha is a Director with McKinsey & Company. He has served a broad range of clients across Africa in fields including telecom, health care, oil & gas, and banking. Acha started his career with McKinsey in the USA, and transferred to the Johannesburg office to drive the firm's expansion across Sub- Saharan Africa.

This work has taken Acha to countries such as Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Cote d'Ivoire, Senegal, and Botswana amongst others. In 2005, Acha became the first black Partner elected by McKinsey's Johannesburg office. Acha is a Co-Founder of the African Leadership Academy.

He holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering, and an MS in Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management from Stanford University. He also holds a BS degree summa cum laude in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
